Reliable power supply under any conditions, even during emergencies! That was proved by power engineers during a drill performed at DTEK Kurakhivska TPP. They extinguished mock fires and evacuated the injured jointly with the team of the State Emergency Service.
The modelled situation provided for a combustion of fuel oil stored in a container in the dedicated area. The fire posed a risk of explosion. Moreover, the mock injured were poisoned by soot-containing smoke and lost consciousness.
The civil defense team of DTEK Kurakhivska TPP had only few minutes to save their colleagues and contain a mock fire site.
For this purpose, the plant has a fire extinguishing system. Fire hydrants have also been installed in the areas where containers with fuel oil are stored, in a fuel warehouse, and on the outdoor switchgear site. Special compressed air devices are available for protection of power engineers. This respiratory protective system enables rescuers to work in severe smoke conditions.
“DTEK Energy is a responsible and reliable company. This why we intentionally create extremely difficult mock situations for drills which helps ensure the TPP’s reliable operation under any conditions. We even add artificial smoke, so the mock situation looks like a real one. Our voluntary fire brigade’s members are the first who arrive to the scene, and they prevent the fire from spreading. The hone their skills of interaction with fire rescue and emergency services to save human lives. Our aim is a zero-incident rate,” explains Evhen Udod, lead civil defense specialist at DTEK Kurakhivska TPP.
The power engineers should be able to make decisions on saving the lives of their personnel and ensuring reliable power supply to residential and non-residential consumers in the most challenging situations.
In general, such trainings are traditionally held at all DTEK businesses because the company is not only an industry leader who contributes to the country’s energy independence but also a responsible employer who cares about the safety of its employees.
