DTEK Ladyzhynska TPP has received a license to operate on the ancillary service market

Ladyzhynska TPP received a certificate issued by NPC Ukrenergo to confirm the plant’s compliance with the requirements applicable to the suppliers of ancillary services on the electricity market in mid-August. The plant has already been recorded in the register of suppliers.

In the past two weeks, NPC Ukrenergo tested power units 2 and 3 of Ladyzhynska TPP. The purpose of those tests was to establish whether the plant was capable of operating on the ancillary services market and ensure stable and reliable operation of the Ukrainian united energy system and quality of electricity alongside other players of that market. Following the tests, Ukrenergo confirmed that Ladyzhynska TPP met applicable requirements.

“To prove our ability to operate on the ancillary services market, we demonstrated load-following capacity of our power units during the certification period. We increased the load on the power units to the maximum in 15 to 30 minutes and then shed the load within the same short period. We were able to demonstrate that we could maintain stable load in all operating modes,” says Yurii Maltsev, chief engineer at DTEK Ladyzhynska TPP. “We also proved to Ukrenergo that Ladyzhynska TPP was capable of providing services of secondary control: manual reserves of up to 85 MW for restoring frequency in load-increasing and load shedding modes, and services of tertiary control: replacement reserve of 92 MW in load-increasing and load shedding modes.”

Four thermal power plants operated by DTEK Energy: Kurakhivska, Zaporizka, Burshtynska, and Ladyzhynska, Kharkivska CHPP, and HPPs can now participate in auctions for ancillary services held in the trading zone of the Ukrainian united energy system. Those plants received certificates and have already been recorded in the Register of suppliers.

“We are changing and improving alongside the electricity market. We use every effort to ensure that we meet the requirements of this market and have a competitive edge. The entry to the ancillary services market is a new experience for us. It will help us perfect our skills and improve our flexibility. I am sure that we will succeed. We are backed by professional skills and expertise of our power engineers and strong potential of our plant driven by investments made by the company in the upgrade of technologies, modernization of equipment, and improved production performance on all stages,” explains Ihor Sniehin, director of DTEK Ladyzhynska TPP. “Unfortunately, Ukrenergo stopped procuring manual reservation services since the end of July. We hope that it will resume purchasing this service when an autumn and winter season starts. Anyway, we are ready to operate on the ancillary service market. This will provide us with an additional source of income that will be invested in the plant’s development. The plant’s stable operation under any conditions is DTEK Energy’s contribution to the energy independence of the state.”

A single ancillary service market functions in Ukraine. The market players include the system operator that purchases or uses ancillary services and suppliers of ancillary services that offer or provide ancillary services. Services of frequency and active power control, maintaining the balance between active power and energy in the United Energy System of Ukraine (UESU), maintaining the parameters of reliability and quality of electricity in the UESU, and service of restoring the function of the UESU after major incidents are offered and provided on this market. Technical compliance with the requirements applicable to providers of ancillary services is confirmed by a certificate issued by Ukrenergo, and Ladyzhynska TPP has received such a certificate. The certificate issued to Ladyzhynska TPP is valid until August 14, 2025.
