Taking Care of the Environment: Ash and Slag Pipeline was Repaired at DTEK Luhanska TPP

208 m of ash and slag pipelines were repaired at DTEK Luhanska TPP in two months — August and September. This is necessary for the smooth operation and high performance of the thermal power plant, as well as to prevent possible negative impacts on the environment.

The hydraulic ash removal system transports ash and slag — coal combustion products — to storage sites. Being under the abrasive effect of slags, ash and slag pipes subsequently wear out, which can result in their leakage. DTEK ENERGY TPPs continuously repair them in order to prevent this. This year, sections of ash and slag pipelines No. 6 and No. 7 have been repaired at Luhanska TPP.

‘We regularly assess the condition of ash and slag pipelines. As the pipe walls wear off, we carry out repairs or replacements. For this purpose, we uncover a section of the pipe, make steel plating and reinforce it in the lower part. For example, sections of ash and slag pipelines Nos. 6 and 7 have already been uncovered three times. Therefore, in order to avoid an emergency in the hydraulic ash removal system of the Luhanska TPP, we replaced them. This means that they will last a long time, the plant staff can be confident that these sections are fully operational and that nothing threatens the environment,’ said Oleksii Tavolzhanskyi, Manager of the Heat Supply, Underground Communications and Hydraulic Structures Department of DTEK Luhanska TPP.

‘DTEK ENERGY is a reliable and responsible company. Therefore, we implement projects and carry out work that reduce and prevent the negative impact of our enterprises on the environment. Repair of the ash and slag pipeline will help to avoid pipe bursting and ash and slag leaking to the ground. This is our contribution to the stable operation of the TPP and to the country’s energy independence,’ commented Borys Safonov, Director of DTEK Luhanska TPP.
