Port Yuzhny received the third vessel with South African coal for DTEK’s TPPs. This coal will be used to replenish the coal stocks burnt by the power plants to make up for the capacity shortage in the Ukrainian grid during the summer months. Now, the power plants are preparing for the winter period.

The bulk carrier SBI REGGAE delivered 75 ths tonnes of South African anthracite to Ukraine. The vessel is being unloaded. After unloading, the fuel will go to the Prydniprovska and Kryvorizka TPPs.

These power plants contribute to maintaining a stable energy supply during a peak demand period in the summer season.

Since early August, the Kryvorizka TPP has been carrying an average nighttime load of 600 MW and an average daytime load of 735 MW. Prydniprovska TPP has been carrying a nighttime load of 150 MW and a daytime load of 200MW.  In this mode, the plants burn a total of 10 ths tonnes of anthracite daily.

"The imported coal we received earlier created a necessary safety stock for our TPPs allowing them to operate in the summer period. This enabled an uninterrupted power supply to households and companies. The next vessel from the South Africa is going to arrive in mid September, when an active phase of coal accumulation for the winter starts," said Vitaly Butenko, Commercial Director of DTEK ENERGY.

As part of the concluded contract, DTEK has already imported a total of 225 kt of anthracite to Ukraine from the South Africa. The first vessel with 75 kt of anthracite for DTEK's thermal power plants arrived in Ukraine on 25 May and the second one on 23 July. The total amount of coal contracted to be imported from the RSA is 675 kt.

It is worth mentioning that DTEK is working to bring down Ukraine's dependence on imported anthracite and by the beginning of the winter period 2017, we plan to have two generating units at the Prydniprovska TPP transferred from anthracite to high-volatile steam coal mined in Ukraine.
