DTEK Eco-Industrial Tourism Pilot Project Launched in Ladyzhyn

In Ladyzhyn, an excursion was held for students and teachers of the country’s leading universities at the unique Ladyzhynska TPP energy complex. This excursion launched an eco-industrial tourism project that DTEK plans to implement. Ladyzhynska TPP complex combines three areas of electricity generation: traditional thermal, hydro and solar power plants. Thanks to DTEK, environmental students, economists and power engineers have the opportunity to get to know and study power generation and the prospects for the development of power engineering directly at the facilities.

Ladyzhyn complex is the only example in Ukraine of load-following and renewable power generation in one city. Convenient location of Ladyzhynska TPP, Ladyzhynska HPP and Ladyzhynska SPP allows to get acquainted in detail just within few hours with the basics of different industries and see how these types of generation work. The first excursion group, which included students of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and the Institute of International Relations of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, was able to experience this.

The guests visited the control panels, looked at the turbine and boiler, car dumpers and coal conveyor belt at Ladyzhynska TPP. Students also learned about innovative technologies that DTEK is actively developing — the use of artificial intelligence in production for occupational safety and drones for equipment inspection. After visiting the thermal power plant, the guests got acquainted with the facilities of Ladyzhynska hydroelectric power plant and the solar power plant and saw how power engineers preserve and maintain a favourable ecosystem around the enterprises — a pond with fish and a nesting place for birds. At the end of the excursion, the students visited the Ladyzhyn Grove arboretum, a partner project of DTEK and the town authorities, which is being developed through financing from environmental tax paid by Ladyzhynska TPP.

Inna Bednarska, Lecturer of the Department of Thermal Power Engineering of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, said: ‘Presently, students receive information about industrial facilities of the country mainly from books and videos, and this, of course, does not help them understand how enterprise operates and how important it is for Ukraine. We are grateful to DTEK for the initiative to show to our talented young people unique facilities and share experience and understanding of the country’s strategic enterprises operation. The enterprises that we visited in Ladyzhyn are examples of not only powerful energy industry, but also responsible and environmentally friendly production and commitment to the environment. We hope that the eco-industrial tourism project will gain momentum and will popularize the activity of industry specialists.’

‘Our goal is to make energy industry simple, accessible and open for everyone, to show that it is efficient and environmentally friendly. We care not only about our enterprises, but also about the communities where we operate. DTEK is a socially responsible business that wants to shape and spread the eco-thinking of the modern generation. The future of Ukraine is in our hands — business and youth. And when young people see with their own eyes the current state, the latest technologies and prospects, they will make efforts to further develop the energy sector, economy and our country,’ commented Ihor Sniehin, Director of DTEK Ladyzhynska TPP.
