Ladyzhynska TPP, together with other DTEK’s TPPs, is preparing to adopt the international practice of energy management. DTEK ESCO, an energy service company specialising in energy efficiency, provides advice to this enterprise. Consultants of German expert organisation TÜV SÜD have helped carry out an evaluation audit of the plant’s technological processes. Together with the power engineers, they will develop a comprehensive energy-saving programme for the plant spanning several years. Once the programme is implemented, the energy management system will be certified in accordance with ISO 50001 international standard.

Experts note that only organisational measures can save up to 10% of energy resources, and investments will reduce energy costs by a third. Head of the Energy efficiency department of TÜV SÜD Pavlo Petryk explained how ready the Ladyzhynska TPP is to these changes:

“Achieving maximum energy resources savings requires engaging employees of all levels. The personnel with the chief engineer services have already received training on energy management and energy audit. Now the enterprise is fine-tuning some business processes, developing regulations for energy conservation. Preparatory works have already been mostly completed. The next step is to incorporate some of our recommendations. After that, the plant will already be ready to pass certification according to ISO 50001 standard. But the greatest benefit is brought not by certificates, but by the plant’s staff being ready to keep the energy management system constantly going following the principle of “Plan – Implement – Check – Correct”.

Oleh Rudenko, Deputy Chief Engineer for Operation of Equipment, DTEK Ladyzhynska TPP, spoke about current energy-efficient projects:

“The first joint project of Ladyzhynska TPP and DTEK ESCO covered the installation of a performance frequency regulation system at two pumps. The next step is to replace four more devices at the external grid sites. Also the main plant facility will have the lighting system completely upgraded with replacement of old incandescent and fluorescent lamps with energy-efficient LEDs. This will reduce lighting costs 9 times. As a result, the power plant will get an opportunity to make savings on auxiliary power consumption. As a result, the electric power production costs will go down.”

“Savings of up to 90% can be reached by using an energy service mechanism. The feasibility of these savings is proven by the projects that we have already implemented. DTEK Dobropil’s’ka CEP has managed to save 90,5% by replacing 340 old lamps with LEDs. And frequency converters at Metinvest’s Central MPP save up to 60% of electric power for pumps every month. The energy service allows to upgrade and renovate offices and social facilities in Ladyzhyn,” comments Andrii Ivanko, Head of the project management department at DTEK ESCO.

It is expected that the recommendations provided by the consultants will be implemented next year. As a result, an energy efficiency culture will be instilled at the plant, and the project will complement the Novator continuous improvement project that has already helped Ladyzhynska TPP save about UAH 47,2M since the beginning of 2017.
