Up to 650 MW of new combined-cycle gas generation (CCGT) using GE Vernova technologies will be built at a DTEK Energy industrial site. This is the largest project to create new flexible gas generation capacity in Ukraine and reflects a shared aspiration to support Ukraine's energy security, the resilience of the energy system and long-term decarbonisation.
This step is part of DTEK's strategic programme to move from coal to gas and aims to provide the country's energy system with more flexible electricity supply with lower carbon emissions.
The project will be implemented under a memorandum of cooperation that DTEK and GE Vernova, a global leader in energy technologies, signed during URC 2026 in Gdańsk, Poland — a key event for governments, financial institutions and private-sector investors aimed at accelerating Ukraine's recovery. The memorandum was signed in the presence of First Vice Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, with the participation of DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko, GE Vernova Chief Corporate Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer Roger Martella, and DTEK Energy CEO Oleksandr Fomenko.
The CCGT gas generation project is one of two DTEK initiatives that the Government of Ukraine has designated as flagship projects at the URC session. Eighteen projects will form the basis of the “Economy of the Future” plan, designed to accelerate Ukraine's economic recovery through specific infrastructure projects. DTEK's second project is the Poltavska Wind Farm, with a capacity of 650 MW in central Ukraine.
According to DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko, the partnership with GE Vernova shows that the industry's global leaders are ready to invest in Ukraine's energy future despite the ongoing war.

“This project is not only about restoring what has been destroyed, but also about creating a modern, flexible energy system that is in line with European energy-transition trends. By combining world-class technologies with international financing, we are creating attractive investment opportunities,” he noted.
Unlike traditional thermal generation, modern gas turbines are able to start up within minutes and rapidly change their load. This makes it possible to promptly offset power shortages, maintain the frequency in the power system and increase its resilience. Another key advantage is support for the development of renewable energy. The output of solar and wind power plants depends on the weather, so the energy system needs capacities that can increase or decrease electricity production just as quickly. This is precisely the role that the new gas generation will play.
For DTEK Energy, this project marks the transition to a new stage of development. For more than four years, the company has been restoring generating units after russian attacks, bringing back into operation the equipment that the enemy tried to destroy. At the same time, the experience of the war has shown that the future of Ukraine's energy system lies not only in restoration, but also in creating new, more flexible and resilient generation. It is precisely such capacities that will help make Ukraine's energy system stronger, increase its reliability and create conditions for the further development of renewable energy.
