DTEK ENERGY helps coal-mining regions to transform their economies in order to support livelihoods of communities after coal mining in these areas ceases. For the process to be successful, it needs to involve local communities, government, business and international partners. Therefore, with the support of DTEK ENERGY, community investment passports have been developed and a demo version of the crinvest.biz investment portal has been created, which will help attract potential investors to coal territories.
The portal has already posted detailed information about the territories of the private and state coal sectors. Potential investors can learn on this online platform everything about the needs of each community and the resources that can be attracted to create new or improve existing projects. Description of projects is available in success stories. The News chapter introduces visitors of the page with all the events related to fair transformation. A demo version of the portal was developed by representatives of the Agency for Sustainable Development ‘ASTAR’ and local communities with the support of DTEK.
‘DTEK ENERGY cares about the future of Ukraine and the territories where our enterprises operate. The investment portal of coal communities in Ukraine is a good example of public-private partnership, where local communities, with the support of business, develop their investment attractiveness. We hope that the portal will become a bridge between coal territories, which are in great need of investment to launch new economic directions, and active investors, for whom these territories could potentially be of interest,’ said Alina Zuikovska, Head of the DTEK ENERGY Project Group at the V Local Development Forum in Truskavets.
Ukraine supports the European decarbonisation course and is moving towards phasing out the use of hydrocarbons. In this regard, since 2018, DTEK ENERGY has been helping mining regions to develop plans for a fair transformation.
Alina Zuikovska presented the results of the company’s efforts at the V Local Development Forum in Truskavets, where representatives of single-industry towns of Ukraine discussed the risks of closing coal enterprises, the possibilities and resources of coal communities that can be used to restructure local economies, project ideas and concepts, and the possibilities of regional partnership.
With the support of DTEK ENERGY, the process is implemented in the coal areas where the company’s enterprises operate and develops in two main directions: strategic projects (investment passports, investment portal) and local solutions. Thus, in Mykolaivka and Petropavlivka communities (Dnipropetrovsk Region), beekeeping, vegetable growing, horticulture, production of dairy products, candied fruits, cereals will be developed instead of coal mining. In the mining single-industry town of Pershotravensk, it is planned to reform the housing and utility services, open a sewing workshop and teach young people new professions at the local lyceum. With the support of the company, we have developed business plans for small businesses: measures required in the near future, equipment required to significantly increase revenues. The emergence of new enterprises in coal regions will lead to job creation and tax inflows to the local budget.
