They Did It: the First Longwall Was Put into Operation at the Ternivske Mine Group after Passage of the Bohdanivskyi Fault

DTEK Ternivske Mine Group commissioned a new longwall 1003. All employees of the enterprise, especially the Samarska Mine, were looking forward to this significant event. Preparation took a long time. After all, this longwall is a groundbreaker! It launched coal mining from the C10v hidden seam after passage of the Bohdanivskyi fault.

The new longwall length is 250 meters, the planned production is 2.2 thousand tonnes per day. The new face is operated by the team of the Coal Mining Site No. 5 under the leadership of Anatolii Lebediev. The miners plan to extract 840 thousand tonnes of coal. These reserves will provide stable work for the Coal Mining Site No. 5 by October 2022.

‘DTEK invested UAH 98 million in the longwall 1003. The State Commission rated its preparation as “excellent”. New UKD 200/500 mining machine and new SP 251 scraper conveyor were purchased, new transport chain 1003 of the collecting entry was installed, SP 251 scraper feeder and KD-80 sections were overhauled to operate the coal face. The new face is fully operational. We plan to work accident-free in compliance with all safety rules. We will make our contribution to the supply of fuel to Ukrainian thermal power plants,’ said Oleksii Systaliuk, Deputy Director for Production at DTEK Ternivske Mine Group.

Extraction of coal reserves in the C10v seam will help to solve the long-term problem of the Samarska Mine — reduce the high ash content in mined coal. Mining of the C10v seam, when longwall 1003 reaches the scheduled capacity, will reduce ash content from 50 to 25–30%, which will make it possible to deliver part of the coal directly to TPPs without coal enrichment at the central processing plant. This will significantly improve the economic performance of the Samarska Mine. The extraction panel in the longwall is 2,300 m long. This will reduce the number of transitions and time for reloading from one longwall to another. Management of the Ternivske Mine Group believes in miners and hopes for accident-free, safe and highly productive work in this plot.

‘Launching a new longwall at a mine is always a good sign, because this means work, salary and prospects. The entire team of the enterprise was looking forward to the launch of the long-awaited longwall 1003, because this is a new work face for the Samarska Mine. The face fully meets all industrial safety requirements. All departments of the Mine Group worked on the commissioning of the longwall 1003. I am grateful to each employee for their professionalism and responsible attitude to implement the common goal. It is important for me that the state commission highly rated its preparation. DTEK is a responsible and reliable company that constantly provides its coal enterprises with everything they need — materials, personal protective equipment and all other equipment to ensure safe work for our miners using modern equipment to extract strategic raw materials for the energy sector. We all understand how important our G-grade coal is for the operation of Ukrainian power plants. Therefore, we will do our best to ensure the heating season in the country and operate in a sustained way. It is important that our miners receive their salaries, and the budgets of cities and communities receive our taxes for their development,’ summed up Dmytro Zabielin, Director of DTEK Ternivske Mine Group.

To extend the long life of the Samarska Mine, residents of Ternivka, using innovative technologies, worked their way through a unique tectonic anomaly — the Bohdanivskyi fault — by four major mine workings. The miners from the Zakhidno-Donbaska Mine prepared the first extraction panel at this field that was cut off from the C10v seam. There is no record in Ukraine of successful passage of such large natural anomalies. As a result of such a breakthrough, miners obtained access to a new large coal deposit of 10 million tonnes, and this will extend the operation of the Samarska Mine until 2035.

Since the beginning of the year, the Ternivske Mine Group has already commissioned five new longwalls, produced more than 2.66 million tonnes of coal and prepared more than 13.3 km mining workings. The enterprise plans to launch another new longwall by the end of the year and extract 4 million tonnes of coal for the Ukrainian energy sector ensuring light and warmth in the homes of Ukrainians.
